Our Hosts: A Legacy of Hospitality

About Us - Orcas The Landing

The story of The Landing at Orcas began in 1979 when Mary and Jim Forbes acquired their first property and established a charming gift shop, which later became one of the three villas. Over time, their vision grew as they expanded the estate, adding more villas, each with its own special meaning. Grandma’s villa home to Ryan’s grandmother, while Mary and Jim made Rose Cottage their home.

In 1988, the restaurant—now part of The Boardwalk Collective—became a cherished part of the Forbes family legacy. Mary took charge, running Mamie’s Restaurant until 2015. During those years, Ryan, his brother Shawn, and their friends played key roles by landscaping, managing the gift shops, and working at the restaurant.

In the early 90’s, Amee, captivated by the island’s beauty during childhood boating trips with her family, moved to Orcas for a summer job. She began working for Mary Forbes and soon met Ryan. Their shared love for the island and its community brought them together, and they’ve been inseparable ever since.

A few years later, the villas were transformed into full-time vacation rentals, inviting guests to experience the charm of Orcas Island. Around the same time, Ryan and Amee founded Orcas Outdoors. Amee, a U.S. Coast Guard-certified 100-ton merchant marine officer, inspired Ryan to become a sea kayak guide and outfitter, enriching the guest experience with adventures on the water.

Today, The Landing remains a testament to the Forbes family’s dedication to hospitality, adventure, and the enduring charm of Orcas Island.
